Welcome Message from the Conference President
Dear friends,
Infants, children, adolescents and young adults with diabetes are faced with a huge challenge of assisting their bodies to surpass an unfortunate trouble of insulin insufficiency. This challenge has to be met in their most vulnerable periods of life, amidst all other overwhelming hurdles of their growing-up. Their indigenous repugnance to an orderly life is further aggravated by several fears for the future, including the threat of chronic complications, possible discrimination by their peers and later on by future employers and society as general.
Members and friends of ISPAD have demonstrated times-and-again their determination to stand by young people with diabetes. Not only to do their utmost through excellent science and best clinical practice in helping treat diabetes, but also to empower young people with diabetes to build a positive, optimistic and confident self image as equal and valuable members of the society.
I therefore warmly invite you to my hometown Ljubljana to the 35th annual meeting of ISPAD, September 2nd to 5th, 2009. Twenty years after the first ISPAD annual meeting in Slovenia, our Society is stronger, more influential, and as dedicated as ever to our common principles. Please come and actively participate in the exuberant and prolific exchange of scientific and clinical knowledge of every aspect of diabetes in the young. The motto of the 35th annual ISPAD meeting in Ljubljana »Translation research in pediatric diabetes« conveys sincere hope and conviction that by convening and working together we can continue to make a difference for young people entrusted to our care.
We all are tremendously privileged to experience smiling faith radiating from children and budding trust from the watchful eyes of adolescents – let’s share this treasure among us!
