Ljubljana is a lively city in Central Europe and with its 270 000 inhabitants the biggest city in Slovenia. It combines the character of a small town as well as that of a capital. It constitutes the cultural, scientific, economic, political and administrative centre of the country and is the seat of Parliament and the office of the President of Slovenia.
Ljubljana is a city with a long history and that can also be seen in the wide range of various architecture styles. Reasonable through earthquakes in the 16th and 19th century Ljubljana had to be rebuilt more than once. Nowadays a walk through the city reveals civil works from the baroque to the art nouveau period as well as contemporary buildings designed by the world famous architect Jože Plečnik and his pupils. One of the city’s main features is the castle which dates back to prehistory.
Ljubljana demonstrates the perfect combination of quaint flair and modern entertainment. It is a must to do a ramble through the Old City along the Ljubljanica river or enjoy the lively open market. Other attractions are the philharmonic halls which is one of the oldest in the world, and hosts more than 10,000 cultural events every year.
