A: I would ask your doctor or pharmacist.
This isn't a food or drink question. Its a medical question.
Q: Antibiotic/birth control question.. i need answers!!?
I am currently taking the antibiotic Cefzil and i am on the birth control ortho tricyclen lo ...I was wondering if this antibiotic will interfere with my birth control.. my doctor failed to tell me this.
A: It is a widely held belief that antibiotics interfere with the effectiveness of the birth control pill, however this has been disproven:
"The effects of antibiotics on birth control pills may be overstated — except in the case of one antibiotic, rifampin. Studies clearly show that rifampin decreases the effectiveness of birth control pills in preventing ovulation. However, rifampin isn't a widely used antibiotic. Chances are you wouldn't be taking it unless you had tuberculosis or had tested positive for the disease.
Hypothetically speaking, other antibiotics, particularly penicillin and tetracycline derivatives, could impair the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, no large studies have proved such an effect.
Researchers can't rule out the possibility that a small percentage of women may experience decreased effectiveness of birth control pills while taking an antibiotic. And if you're taking a newer, extremely low-dose oral contraceptive, you could be more susceptible to these potential effects from antibiotics. If you're concerned, consider using a barrier method of contraception for the duration of your antibiotic prescription."

"A large study of over 8058 women taking combined oral contraceptives and seeking elective termination of pregnancy showed 70 women (0.87%) who became pregnant while using oral contraceptives (2). This is about the expected failure rate of 1% for OCPs so it is very unlikely that there is a significant impact of many medicines on oral contraceptive efficacy considering all of the medications that are prescribed."

"Certain medicines and supplements may make the pill less effective. These include
* the antibiotic rifampin. Other antibiotics do not make the pill less effective.
* certain anti-fungals that are taken orally for yeast infections
* certain anti-HIV protease inhibitors
* certain anti-seizure medications
* St. John's Wort"

Q: Red, swollen, bloodshot eyes?
I've been home all week with the flu...I've been through it all this week...vomiting, runny nose, high fever, weakness, fatigue, ear infection, cough, drowsiness, etc. I've been on cefzil for the past 3 days and woke up this morning with my eyes both stuck together, very teary, red, swollen, and bloodshot. Could I have pink eye on top of all of this? Or is it just an allergy or reaction to something?
P.S. I've also been on cefzil before, so that doesn't have anything to do with it.
A: Hm, if you've been coughing a lot you could have popped a blood vessel. It is probably more of pink eye or maybe an infection. I've had those same eye symptoms from an infection. If you've been sneezing on your hands and touching your eyes then germs could have infected your eye. Go see an optometrist and they can check your eyes for infections. If there was crusty stuff on your eyes then it's definitely pink eye or an infection.
Q: Strep that will not go away?
My son he is 5 has had Strep since April..well I don't think it has gone away so he had had it like 4 times...well tested 4 times...he has been on different antibiotics and is also allergic to penicillin, cefzil, sulfer. Do they do tonsillectomies anymore?
A: Yes they do but only when someone is healthy, and ins companies have a number of instances treate per year to cover them. Ask your Dr not sure if this warrants the surgery or not.
Sorry, how scary, Strept can be an extrememly dangerous problem.
Throw away tooth brushes every week during this time.
Gargle, sterilize cups used, or better yet use totally dispositble cups plates and utensils, is pretty cheap for one person during this time.
Change pillow case and wash in hot water daily, sheets more often.
Spray lysol on toys and all door nobs, toilet flusher, tub controls bath toys, Id really get into getting this germ irradicated. Tooth brushes can be big factores with illness.
His bug is very strong, so time the meds right and follow drs orders no matter how a hassell. Again, Strept is dangerous.
I hope he gets better very soon.
Q: my son (2.5 yo) was bitten by a wasp?
He has no known allergies except to cefzil (antibiotic)
Should I be concerned.
A: Local reactions are the most common type of reaction to a bee or wasp sting. Symptoms include pain, swelling, warmth, and redness at the site of the sting. Itching may also be present. These symptoms begin immediately following the sting and often last for only a few hours. Depending upon the type of insect, the stinging apparatus may still be visible in the affected skin. Large local reactions have a greater degree of swelling that can last for up to a week, sometimes associated with nausea and/or tiredness. These reactions are not allergic reactions.
Systemic (body-wide) allergic reactions occur in people who have produced a type of antibody known as IgE antibody against the same insect venom as a result of a previous sting. Systemic allergic reactions are estimated to occur in 0.3% to 3% of stings. Symptoms include hives and flushing of the skin and difficulty breathing due to swelling of the pharynx and epiglottis and narrowing of the bronchial passages. The reaction may vary in severity from mild skin hives to life-threatening reactions. The most severe immunologic reactions are known as anaphylaxis and occur more commonly in males and in people under 20 years of age. In severe reactions, hypotension (low blood pressure), circulatory disturbances, and breathing difficulty can progress to fatal cardiorespiratory arrest. Most people who develop anaphylactic reactions have experienced previous stings with few problems. Once an individual has experienced an anaphylactic reaction, the risk of having a recurrent episode is about 60%.
Toxic reactions are a direct result of toxins in the venom rather than the body's immune response. Most often these are due to multiple simultaneous stings that introduce an unusually large amount of venom into the body. Symptoms can include fever, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, fainting or dizziness, and convulsions. Hives, rash, and skin symptoms are less common in toxic reactions than in allergic reactions. Because bee and wasp venom are strong stimulants of the immune response, people who have experienced toxic reactions may produce antibodies to the venom and be at risk for future systemic anaphylactic reactions to stings.
Delayed reactions are uncommon and occur even days to weeks after the sting. These reactions constitute less than 0.3% of all reactions to insect stings. The individual's own medical history and condition may play a role in determining whether delayed reactions occur. Symptoms can vary widely and may include inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), the nerves (neuritis), blood vessels (vasculitis), or kidneys (nephritis) as well as blood clotting disturbances. Serum sickness is a type of delayed reaction that occurs a week to 10 days after a sting and may cause itching, rash, fever, joint pain, fatigue, and swollen lymph nodes.
Most bee and wasp stings can be treated at home, but some cases require medical attention. If there is any suspicion at all that a person is having a systemic allergic reaction, seek immediate emergency medical assistance. Signs that a person may be having a systemic reaction include widespread hives or rash, wheezing, difficulty breathing, and swelling in the mouth and throat areas. If a person is stung by an insect whose sting has previously caused an anaphylactic reaction, he or she should also access emergency medical care even if no symptoms are present.
You should also seek medical care if any of the following conditions are present:
If you have received multiple stings
If the sting is located in the eye or eye area
If symptoms of infection (pus, drainage, fever, increasing pain and redness) develop
If the initial symptoms worsen or persist for longer than 24-48 hours
If a sting produces severe symptoms in young children, the elderly, or those with chronic medical problems
First aid for a bee sting involves cleansing the site, immediate removal of the stinging apparatus (if present), and application of ice or cold packs to the affected area.
Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may be taken to relieve itching and burning. Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) may be taken for pain relief.
If the sting site becomes infected, your doctor may prescribe a course of antibiotics.
If it has been more than 10 years since your last tetanus booster immunization, get a booster within the next few days.
Treatment for a mild allergic reaction (such as a rash without any breathing difficulty) usually involves the administration of antihistamine medications and sometimes steroid medications to reduce inflammation.
Treatment for anaphylactic reaction
The treatment of choice for life-threatening anaphylactic reactions is epinephrine. Emergency medical treatments may also include steroid and antihistamine medications and insertion of a breathing tube. Intravenous fluids and medications to support cardiovascular function may also be required. Treatment
Q: bad sore throat for 9 days--what could I have?
20 yr old male, who hasnt been sick in about 3 years. It started on new years day with a mild sore throat...then came some cold symptoms, nasal congestion and slight cough, along with sore throat. most of the cold symptoms have gone (aside from occasionally coughing up of phlegm). It is now early morning january 10th, and my sore throat is even worse, very painful when i swallow. Saw the doctor twice already, strep came back negative both times, he even had me take a mono test, which was also negative.
he prescribed me antibiotics (cefzil) and he said to take it tonight if my throat gets worse (which it did) so I took it a few hours ago, and throat still hurts like hell. He said to call tomorrow morning.
What could I possibly have?
A: Hi,
I am a doctor..
Well, i know that the cold and sore throat is such a pain.
Since there is a link betwen the throat and the middle ear , sore throat can easily extend and cause otitis media..(middle ear infection)
For the time being, use salt water to gargle your throat.do it 3 times per day.give it some time, it may take about 3 days..
if you feel slat water is not working for you, do the gargling with betadine solution..
when you goto sleep do it as the last thing so that you wont wash you mouth after the salt water/betadine gargle.
do some steam inahaltion.do it about 2/3 times per day.it would help.
take some hot water into a bowl.then cover you head with a towel and inhale the steam.Do it for about 6 mintues..
but you may have to take antibiotics if it is a bacterial infection.amoxycillin 500mg , 3 times per day for 5 days may work..but it again depends on whether you have penicillin allergey and on whethr the organism is penicillin resistant..
so not take amoxycillin if you have penicillin allergy..
the best thing is to get a throat swab culture and ABST done.
it would determine whether this bacterial or viral.consult your doctor for this.
if its viral there may be no need to take anitbiotics. but you just cant sometimes differentiate from examination alone.
for the time being do the above mentioned things.
also avoid drinking cool things and drink more and more hot water and hot beverages.
honey may also soothe your throat..
Do you work in a very cold environment? if so , avoid that place for the time being and goto a warmer area of your workplace..
The first point is that to it to get cured, the antibiotics have to act for atleast 3 days, but even after that, you have to take the full course till it finishes..
The other fact is that the bacteria which infected you may be resistant to the antibiotcs you already had..
Thirdly, after all it may be viral and may go off in a few days.. Remeber that some viruses are really stubborn..take some time to go off..Till then the above mentioned measures may help you..

she was perscribed the last med on monday by her dr.
she also takes Tegretol,Clobazam, and Valproic Acid for Epilepsy everyday
A: Take her to a lung specialist, something is going on and your local GP should have advised you of this.
Q: If my fish have Ick...?
i recently had have some fishes with ick/fungus infections in/on them, that died.... also i have this antibiotic called cefzil/cefprozil 500mg for my recent infection.
So i was wondering if the next time any of my fish get ick or fungal infections, can i use the cefzil and powder it then put it in the water or food?
Would this medication work as a fish antibioctic, or not?
k i get it now thx!
so would this work on bacterial infections? or is it too high of a dosage?
they're pills btw. And if it works, how much of the pill should be powdered and given the the fish, in a case of bacterial infections?
A: Antibiotics will not work against ick or fungal infections as they are for bacterial infections. Ick is a paracite. You shouldn't be dosing your aquarium with human antibiotics as they are too high a dose. Is that what you are asking?
If you are having issues with ick or fungal infections you need to check you water quality. Usually fish come down with those in response to poor water conditions. Also make sure you water is the proper temp for the fish you are keeping.

A: It would seem that the antibiotic isn't working. Go back to the physician and inform them about what is going on. They may want to switch antibiotics to something that covers the infecting organism. Also, try to keep her hydrated. Ask your pharmacist about a good electrolyte replacement product such as pedialyte. Children's Tylenol may be effective for lowering her temp, but a fever that lasts several days is not normal.
Bottom line: your daughter likely still has pneumonia, you should have seen improvement in her condition if the antibiotics were working. She needs to switch to a different antibiotic. Also, if she is losing weight, that is a sign of dehydration. This can be vary serious if allowed to continue. She needs to go back to the Dr.
Q: Pain after surgery... Normal?
My surgery wasnt major! They removed a black mole I had on my lower neck-shoulder area! I went in, the area got cleansed, then it was numbed with anesthetic, afterwards they placed a drape over my neck/face.... The mole was removed by excision and stitches. I was done after 20-25 minutes and four stitches. This was on December 31st 2007... The doctor prescribed CEFZIL (Cefprozil) for me.
Today I am feeling a bit queasy and uneasy... nauseous with some stinginess and mild pain in the treated area. I couldnt sleep well last night... I went to bed at around 11 but stayed up till after 2:00AM!!!
Its the first time I have a surgery with stitches and all and I dont know the healing process.... some of my friends told me its normal and the stingness and/or the pain I am feeling is basically because the wond is healing! But I am really lethargic!
Is it normal?
A: You're lethargic because of the pain meds. As soon as you get off the pain meds, you'll no longer be tired/woozy and queasy.
Everything sounds like it's going right. I've had enough surgeries/hospital stays to know, lol!
Q: MEDICAL EXPERTS Please Read!!!! My 8 year old daughter...?
She has an appointment with her pediatrician tomorrow. I have so much nervousness now tho... just throwing this out there....
The first week of December she was diagnosed with an ear infection. You would never know it. She seemed perfectly healthy skipping down the sidewalk etc. She is allergic to penicillin and to cefzil.. sp? So she was prescribed Zithromax. She took 5 days of the Zpack. On day 8 she came down with a sinus infection. She was put on Bacitracin again sp? sorry. Ten days of the second antiobiotic. Before it is over... day 8... she comes down with a respiratory infection and swollen lymph nodes. Plus... she has light purple dark circles under her eyes and no energy. Doctor puts her on a STRONG antiobiotic and orapred a steroid. This is day 7 of this one. She tells me her side hurts.. where her spleen is located. And her stomach hurts now and then.
She eats well. She has energy. But those dark circles under her eyes come back now and then.
I am WORRIED SICK.
Any insight?
A: I'm not a medical expert, but I'm kind of trying to be one. I try to study as many things like this as I can so I'll be better prepared for the time of which I actually do become one.
I would ask the doctors if there is anything they can do besides the antibiotics. By the way it's looking from my non-professional point of view is that they're giving your daughter some medications that work for a little bit and then they just stop working again. My best guess would be from your daughter's immune system fighting the virus and getting all better and the virus is like, "Heh, no. I gotta change to beat the medicament"
If the dark circles come back every now and then, it's probably from different phases of fatigue, I suppose. She is probably just tired every now and then. The dark circles under her eyes, this is actually something that I do know 100%, come from blood that seeps out of her capillaries due to her being tired. It shows up in most people, but it's more obvious in different people.
Being worried sick won't get you far either, because the more you worry the more stressed out you become. The more stressed out you become, the more your immune system starts to fade. The more that starts to fade, the more you start to get sick. Before you know it, you'll be sicker than before.
Like I said, I would tell the doctor what she's been through, medicine wise, by telling him what medicines she's been taking, what starts to hurt, what swells, and eventually you'll get a good one that actually know what he/she is doing.
Q: Okay let me ask this again with more details!?
I have an upper respiratory infection. I have been to the dr TWICE...I have taken a Z pack, a rocephin shot, and am on Cefzil currently with D Tann CT. My question is this though....I tried to ask before and everyone said get antibiotics! I am finally getting a little better after a week but my left ear is VERY clogged....I can barely hear out of it and it almost sounds like someone is holding a seashell up to it and I can hear the waves lol....is there anyway to help clear it up fast?
A: Sounds like you need a good decongestant, blow your nose alot so the mucus comes out try to fill the bathroom with steam and blow one nostril at a time! Also what you have can lead to inner ear infection so make sure the medication your on is also for an ear infection!! GL
Q: Ear infection problem?
My one year old daughter was diagnosed with an ear infection in her right ear, and given amoxicillin for 10 days, and it never went away. So another ten days on antibiotics, this time Suprax. Go back for a re-check when the medicine finished, and her left ear was now infected. Cefzil for ten days. Go back today, and BOTH ears are infected. 30 days on antibiotics. I am to ake her to an ENT, but my question is, the doctor says there is never any fluid in her ears, just an infection, so tubes will not help. I am impatient and nervous...has anyone ever heard of chronic ear infections that does not stem from fluid in the ear? If tubes won't help what can be done?
A: You should definitley get a second opinion, because this doctor doesn't really seem like he knows what he is doing.
Q: Are their natural ways to get over a sinus infection?
Ive Been on azithromycin back to back for about a month now. Im very limited to antibiotics; Im allergic to cefzil, sulfur, and Clarithromycin. Ive been using a neti pot, Rhinocort, Astelin. I went to the ER two nights ago because i had troble breathing; A really bad migrain and Visial auras. The ER doctor did a chest x-ray and he said i have bronchitis. Right now im left with blurred vision and severe siunuse congestion. What can i do in the meen time to releave this sinuse congestion? preaty much every doctor i go to tells me to keep hydrated and try and ride it out.
A: My husband uses this to keep from getting bronchitis, and I use to to cure sinus infections. THere are many kinds of bacteria that live in the sinuses, and this gets rid of all the bad ones!.This is the only thing that really helped me --- my Dr. told me about a sinus wash that will kill bacteria.
you need
distilled water
sea salt
liquid chlorophyll and colloidal silver from the health food store.
in a glass mix 1/4 cup water with a pinch of salt and heat to body temperature.
add 5 drops each silver and chlorophyll and mix.
using a large dropper (like one used for infant medication) drop 2 full droppersfull into one side of the nose while laying down.
Turn the head and let it drain out the other nostril. Be sure to have paper towels handy.
The silver kills the bacteria and there are several hundred kind that can live in the sinus cavities and anti biotics don't get rid of them all.
Do this twice a day for a week, mixing up the mixture fresh each time.
Then do it once a week for maintenance.
There is nothing in this that will hurt you, and it cured me.
I do not have to take claritin, or antibiotics anymore.
best wishes
